Geometry!!!

Geometry!!! by Math Pentagon is an amazing app that is worth a lot more than the $2.99 price tag it displays in the iTunes store.  The app has 4 different levels of geometry with each level increasing in rigor and expectations.  Students are given a set of problems from a chosen category of geometry with a drop down menu of multiple choice answers.  Once the student answers the question the app provides encouraging feedback if the answer if incorrect and a congratulations if the problem is correct.  Students earn points for each problem set in the category and can still earn partial points if they answer the questions correct on the second try, as an incentive for the student to keep trying.  There is plenty of space on each page for the student to use their finger as a stylus to work out problems that require computations.

The app allows for students to use it for self-guided independent practice as well as allows the teacher to set up specific problem sets for each student.  Both the student and the teacher can review the results of each set of problems and the results can be saved.   This helps hold the student accountable for their work, provides easily stored records for parent/teacher conferences, and allows students to practice self monitoring.
Overall, the app is an excellent resource for teachers and students.  It has a thousands of problems, so the students will not get repeats, as well as varying skill levels.  This app helps teachers provide more individualized practice while enabling each student to be successful at their highest level of ability.  The cons of the app include the size of the text and graphics on the problem pages as well as loading correctly.  Occasionally when using the app, the loading screen would come up for a few minutes and would not go away until the app was closed and reopened.

  1. I like apps that students can grow with as they advance through geometry, it makes it worth it especially when you're paying for it. It's valuable that this app allows students to go through guided practice that they can do right in the app instead of getting a piece of paper.

  2. I really enjoy the encouragement that this app is providing the students who use it. I know that some of my students get easily frustrated when they do not do well on a game, but with this app it will give them the chance to keep going. i also enjoy how they can workout the problem and getting rid of the pencil and paper.

  3. Your app review posting just gave me hope that there might be fabulous elementary based math games available. I like that this app has different levels for different leveled learners. Have you tried this app with your students yet?

  4. I really like that this app allows students to use their finger as a stylus to actually show their work on screen and completely replace the use of paper and pencil, and the fact that teachers and students can view results makes it even better.

  5. I really think that this app is great and what a great review of the app itself. I how the students are able to do everything on a touch screen environment. As Scott mentioned it is really awesome how students can use their finger as a stylus to show their work. This app seems to have many great options for learning geometry and definitely has a place in any math classroom.

  6. I hate math. That being said, I would try the app. That is the really cool thing about using digital media in the classroom. Students, teachers and parents will try engaging in a learning activity that they might usually avoid.

  7. As a fellow math teacher, I really like the look of this app based on your review. I have not heard or used of it before, but I will definitely be downloading it now and I will recommend it to the other math teachers in my department. Geometry is a huge part of our state testing in Delaware, and it is a big weak point for our students. This looks like a great way to get the students more excited about a subject that can many times be last on a student's list of favorites. Thanks for the review!

  8. I like this app a lot. I have to say I was awful at geometry and this app might have made my experience more tolerable had I been able to use this whan I was in high school. I like that this app has thousands of problems. My biggest fear sometimes with these apps is that the students will get repeat questions and then what is the point. Good Job
